The Story behind the Artwork
I always loved the old NZ coins was inspired to bring them to life with colour and character. The 5 cent coin is such a beautiful design and needed to be seen in colour.
Sea shells where added around the rock to break up the grey. It was such a pleasure to finally paint a Tuatara. I had been wanting to paint one for years but was unsure how I could create it in my style.
This coin was around from 1967 - 2006 so it was hard to find a shiny specimen, but my old coin jar came to the rescue.
This is the first artwork in the ‘NZ treasures coin series’ and there will be six in total of the old NZ coins - 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c 20c and 50c.
