The Story behind the Artwork
Years ago when people sent letters I was bit of a stamp collector, mostly because I loved the beautiful little artworks that travelled with a important letter or birthday card. Recently I re-visited my old stamp collection which sparked an idea to bring these little gems to life.
The first in the ‘Larger than Life’ series, the Centennial NZ Stamp from 1940, a great little stamp featuring ‘A Giant Kauri’.
This is the largest watercolour painted to date, an artwork that took over two months to put together. How do you paint a giant Kauri tree when it’s near impossible to see the top of the canopy? Research and more research, piecing together what this magnificent canopy would look like to its neighbours. To accompany this great NZ icon, seven native birds join this natural wonder.
